How to count a false ceiling: boards, furring and hangers
Updated October 11, 2026
A suspended ceiling is ordered from the area of the room. The boards or tiles follow from the area and their size; the frame follows from the spacings that the maker of the system gives. This guide counts quantities; it does not design the ceiling.
1. Area and edge
Multiply the room length by its width. The edge channel or wall angle runs round the room: twice the length plus the width.
2. Boards, furring and hangers
Divide the area, increased by the waste, by the area of one board. The furring runs at its spacing, so its length is the area divided by that spacing. One hanger serves the area of the furring spacing times the hanger spacing along it: divide the ceiling area by that and round up.
Worked example: 6 × 4 m room
Boards 1.20 × 2.50 m, furring every 60 cm in 3 m bars, hangers every 1.20 m, 10 % waste, 15 screws and 0.4 kg of compound per m²:
Area 6 × 4 = 24 m², edge channel 20 m.
Boards: 24 × 1.10 ÷ 3 = 8.8, so 9 boards.
Furring: 24 ÷ 0.6 = 40 m, or 14 bars of 3 m.
Hangers: 24 ÷ (0.6 × 1.2) = 33.3, so 34.
Screws 360; jointing compound 9.6 kg.
Lay-in tiles on a grid
For 60 × 60 cm tiles there is a line of profile every 60 cm in both directions: 1/0.6 + 1/0.6 = 3.33 m of profile per m². Main runners every 1.20 m carry the cross tees, and the hangers hang from the main runners.
What this does not cover
The count does not design the ceiling: the frame, the load a hanger carries, the fire, acoustic and humidity requirements and the board type come from the maker’s data and the engineer.
