Reinforced Concrete in Detail

Choose the element, enter its dimensions and the reinforcement layout you already have from the engineer’s drawings. The tool gives the concrete, the formwork (or none, when the concrete is poured against the soil), the concrete trucks, the stripping times and the reinforcement mark by mark: longitudinal bars, stirrups, starter bars (attentes) and meshes, with cut lengths and weights. The drawings show the reinforcement cage in 3D, the section and the elevation with the stirrup zones.

Dimensions

cm
m
mm

The bent foot of the column bars in the footing, from the drawings. 0 = straight bars.

cm

Length of the bars left sticking out above the column for the next level. 0 = none.

cm

0 = one spacing over the whole length.

From the drawings (it depends on the exposure).

In bar diameters: an editable assumption, check it against the drawings.

m³

A starting value from usual practice: take the real figure from the specification and the engineer (it depends on cement, weather and loads).

How to use it

  1. Choose a column, an isolated footing, a strip footing, a beam, a solid slab or a wall.
  2. Enter the dimensions, the bars and the stirrups from the drawings, and tick the formwork if the concrete is formed.
  3. Replace the starting values (cover, hook, lap, panel size, reuse, stripping days) with those of the specification.
  4. Read the concrete, the formwork, the steel by mark and the pour and stripping sequence.

Examples

Worked example — Column (poteau) — Column width 30, Column depth 30, Column height 3, Longitudinal bars (min. 4) 4, Stirrup spacing (middle zone) 15

Concrete volume: 0.270 m³ · Concrete to order (with waste): 0.284 m³ · Concrete trucks: 1 · Formwork contact area: 3.60 m² · Formwork panels to buy (with reuse): 1 · Number of stirrups: 21 · Longitudinal bars, weight (with offcuts): 10.65 kg · Stirrups, weight: 9.28 kg · Total steel weight (with offcuts): 20.93 kg · Steel per m³ of concrete: 77.5 kg/m³ · Strip the sides after (days): 3

Frequently asked questions

Does it design the element?

No. It takes off a layout you already have: it does not choose sections, bar diameters, spacings, covers or anchorages, and it is not a structural design. The engineer’s drawings and bar schedule take precedence.

What are starter bars (attentes)?

Bars left sticking out of a footing or a column so that the next element can be connected to them. The tool counts their length (embedded depth, foot and projection) in the steel.

Can I compute without formwork?

Yes. Untick the formwork when the concrete is poured against the soil, for instance a footing in a trench: the formwork area is then zero and only the concrete and the steel are counted.

Where do the stripping times come from?

They are starting values from usual practice. Take the real ones from the specification and the engineer: they depend on the cement, the weather and the loads.
