Roof Quantities (tiles, sheets, rafters)

Enter the length and width of the building, the eaves overhang and the pitch. PRAXAO works out the roof area on the slope, then what covers it — tiles with their battens and ridge tiles, or profiled sheets with their purlins and screws — and the common rafters. The drawing shows the roof in 3D, in plan and in section.

How to use it

  1. Choose a tiled roof or a sheet roof, and a gable or a hip roof.
  2. Enter the building length and width, the overhang and the pitch.
  3. Replace the starting values (tile or sheet size, laps, spacings) with your supplier’s data.
  4. Read the covering to buy, the battens or purlins and the rafters, with the waste included.

Examples

Worked example — Tiled roof — Building length 10, Building width (span of the roof) 6, Eaves overhang (all round) 50, Roof pitch 30

Roof area on the slope: 88.91 m² · Length of a common rafter: 4.04 m · Common rafters: 40 · Ridge length: 11.00 m · Tiles to buy: 1201 · Battens, total length: 277.85 m · Ridge and hip tiles: 28

Frequently asked questions

Does it design the roof?

No. It counts what a set of dimensions requires. The pitch a covering needs, the timber sizes, the wind and snow loads and the fixings come from the maker’s data and the engineer.

How is the area on the slope found?

The plan area, overhang included, is divided by the cosine of the pitch. A hip roof with equal slopes has the same area as a gable roof on the same plan.

How are tiles counted?

One tile covers its gauge (length minus overlap) times its cover width. The roof area is increased by the waste percentage, divided by that, and rounded up to whole tiles.
